Cyprus reopening airports

Cyprus is planning to reopen its airports to visitors from the 1st of March as announced by Ministry of Transport last Wednesday.

Countries will be classed within a colour-coded health risk assessment system: Green, Orange, or Red. The new ‘traffic light’ system of categorization is adopted from the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).

Categorization for EU member states and countries within the European Economic Area (EEA) will be assessed based on their epidemiological data. The Ministry of Health will evaluate data from ‘third countries’ (Belarus, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK) as well as those flagged by the ECDC to determine their category classification.

From April 1st, Armenia, Bahrain, Georgia, Qatar and USA will be added to the list.

Countries not included in the above mentioned categories will be placed in a ‘Grey’ category for arrivals requiring a special permit.

The new categories to go into effect as of 1st March 2021 are as follows:

Green Category

Low-risk countries as determined by the Ministry of Health according to their epidemiological data.

For all of March, passenger arrivals from Green category countries will be entitled to a free PCR laboratory test covered by the government.

From 1st April, there will be no restrictions.

Orange Category

Passenger arrivals from Orange category countries will be required to undergo a laboratory test within 72 hours prior to departure to Cyprus and provide a certificate proving a negative PCR test.

Red Category

Passenger arrivals from countries in the Red Category will be required to undergo a PCR within 72 hours prior to departure to Cyprus, and will require a follow-up PCR upon arrival.

Self-isolation will not be required for arrivals with negative test results.

Grey Category

This category contains countries not included on ECDC lists or which do not keep reliable epidemiological data. Passenger arrivals from the Grey category will require a special permit to gain entry to Cyprus.

Arrivals will also be required to self-isolate in accordance with instructions from the Ministry of Health.

Cypriot citizens, Republic of Cyprus residents and European citizens will be exempt from this category.

Process to be reviewed periodically

The Ministry of Health will continue to review their measures depending on the epidemiological situation for different countries and will update the categories on a weekly basis.

All passenger arrivals regardless of category will be required to undergo a PCR laboratory test. Random testing at airports will remain in place.

All arrivals from the United Kingdom up until 31st March will be required to quarantine for seven days at a facility under the supervision of health authorities.
